Brownswood are delighted to announce a forthcoming single by multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter Diggs Duke, following on from his last EP The Upper Hand and Other Grand Illusions.
Living between San Fran and DC, Diggs Duke is firmly cemented in the exciting soul & jazz scene coming out of the US. Rooted in jazz, his arrangements are remarkably refreshing, eschewing traditional song structure for a looser groove-based aesthetic, punctuated with short bursts of his effortless Dwele-esque vocals. “I like to keep things concise as far as lyrics are concerned. So people can take it in… there’s no filler, so you get the point as soon as you hear it y’know?”
Side A to the single, ‘He Wants To Live Like You’ is a testament to Diggs’ masterful musical arrangement and songwriting. With beautifully worded anecdotal lessons of life, and the steadily smooth keys and bass, Diggs Duke delivers a track rich with his inimitable soulful style.
In Gilles Peterson’s words; “Diggs Duke’s takes an avant-garde beatmaker’s approach to making soul music…It’s straight-to-the-point, drunken soul with a twist.” This is apparent in the second track to the single, ‘Water For Sale’ an instrumental track with the hallmarks of a MPC produced beat, yet still a distinctly instrumentally led track.
The single will be released on 7” single & digitally.
